Political Action Committee
The Political Action Committee (PAC), and/or all of our political accounts/programs, are created to support the Association’s policy and legislative goals, as well as our legal and labor objectives. The PAC compliments, supports, and defends these primary objectives for the Association and benefit of our Members and the community.
What exactly is a Political Action Committee? Literally, it is a committee comprised of Association members who serve to support and/or oppose qualified candidates on a non-partisan basis for office. Those offices can be on the local level (School Board, Water Board, City Council, Supervisor, Judge, etc…) or on the state level (State Assembly, State Senate, and Constitutional Offices), but may NOT support candidates for Federal Office.
The PAC ensures our voice is heard throughout the halls of government and depends on the support of our membership. Thanks to the growth and restructuring of the Association and PAC, we are ready for all opportunities, challenges, and/or threats to our profession.
With our new Issues and/or Independent Expenditure Committees to compliment our main candidate PAC, we can also participate in activities ranging from local ballot initiatives to supporting and/or opposing candidates with unlimited resources. Our goal is to be professional, successful, and timely when it comes to issues that deal with the community and their safety. We must also remain vigilant against some public officials, irrespective of their intentions, who have (or will) attempt to debilitate the afforded benefits and/or rights of peace officers.
For 2008 and beyond, we now have a formal process for those political candidates seeking the LHPA endorsement and support when it comes election time. This provides a forum for us to gain insight into the candidate’s qualifications, philosophies, and their viability. We value the opportunity to discuss the issues with candidates/officials for the betterment of our community and profession.
Rest assured the LHPA endorsement is not hastily given out. After the thorough process, the PAC makes recommendations to the Board Members for their final decision to endorse, abstain, or oppose.
The bottom line: We will strongly support those elected or appointed officials, initiatives, and other items that are good for public safety and the community. Let it be known we shall remain professional, objective, and helpful; but if anyone were to use our good name incorrectly and/or misrepresent their interview or intentions, then we shall be forced to take action. We have a new very experienced, and respected, political consultant who brings the networking, education, time, and resources to protect and defend our community and members.
Please contact any LHPA Board Member for any additional information.
